Dr. Jack Kottwitz

Instructor of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Jack Kottwitz earned a BSed in Secondary Education/Biology (1997) and a DVM (2001) from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He entered mixed animal practice, before completing an internship in Exotic Animal Medicine at The Ohio State University (2003) and was a resident in Zoological Companion Animal Medicine (2005-2006) at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. In 2013, he completed a concurrent residency in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology with a specific focus on zoo animals, and a PhD in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences (zoological clinical pharmacology) at Auburn University. 

His research interests include mega-vertebrate analgesia, species differences in the clinical efficacy and adverse effects of pharmaceuticals, the effects of anesthesia and analgesic drugs on assisted reproduction, water quality as it affects captive animal and human health, management of invasive wildlife species, and modulation of stereotypical behaviors in carnivores by improving sleep patterns.
